BREEAM Applications

BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method and is a leading global standard for assessing the sustainability of the built environment. It provides a framework to assess the environmental, social, and economic performance of buildings and infrastructure throughout their life cycle, from new construction to refurbishment and use.

A successful BREEAM assessment earns a building a certification rating, ranging from "Pass" to "Outstanding".  ​

• How it works: 

  It uses a science-based approach with different technical standards for various stages of a project's life cycle. An assessor awards credits for meeting performance benchmarks, which contribute to an overall score and rating. 

• Why it's used: 

  It helps projects achieve their sustainability goals, improve the performance of buildings, and provides a recognized measure of a building's green credentials. 

• Global reach: 

  While it is the most common building certification in the UK, BREEAM is used in over 85 countries worldwide. 

• What it assesses: 

  BREEAM evaluates a wide range of sustainability issues, including energy use, health and well-being, water use, waste, pollution, and transport.
